Sonic Adventure 2, Sonic Heroes, and Sonic the Hedgehog (2006) are some games in the series which do not feature a Game Over screen. While very rare at first, Sonic games are increasingly abandoning the Game Over along with the life feature, with the player being instead given infinite lives in those titles or the option to disable them. In several games, such as Sonic Adventure, Shadow the Hedgehog and Sonic Generations, if the player gets to the Game Over menu, the game asks to continue playing or return to the title screen or menu section of the game. In the SegaSonic the Hedgehog arcade game, when the player gets a Game Over, they have to insert more coins into the cabinet within ten seconds to continue or get a Game Over. With the introduction of the save feature in Sonic the Hedgehog CD and Sonic 3 & Knuckles however, the player would instead be forced back to the first Act of the Zone where they got a Game Over. To compensate, they can also use a Continue to continue playing. In earlier Sonic games, due to the lack of a save feature, getting a Game Over makes the player restart their progress from the very beginning, generally from the title screen or the menu section.
